Have you ever fancied a calendar full of Canadian bearded men wearing mermaid outfits? If so, you’re in luck, as 70 members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Beard & Moustache Club have come together to pose for a cause.
All of the money raised by this majestic calendar will go to Spirit Horse NL, a stable that helps provide those struggling with mental illness therapy horses to aid in their recovery.
And clearly the club thought it was such a worthy cause that they were willing to don mermaid tails for those who need therapy horses in their area.
The 2018 calendar features 12 months of “MerB’ys,” or burly bearded men in mermaid tails doing mermaid-like things, such as being by the sea, drinking beer or getting hair and beard trims; assuming mermaids participate in such activities.
Thus far, 300 orders for the male mermaid calendar have been placed from all around the world. Orders have come from as far as France and Germany, and with the extended press coverage, it is likely they’ll have even more orders rolling in during the next few weeks in the run up to 2018.
Hasan Hai, who founded the club, told CBC why he chose Spirit Horse NL for their group to raise funds.
“They’re desperately in need of funds and awareness because it’s expensive to raise and upkeep horses. I figured right away that this is a cause our club can get behind,” he told the Canadian media outlet.
Hasan Hai also said that the mermaid calendar serves another purpose: to stand defiantly in the face of what it means to “be a man” in today’s society and “poking holes” in gender norms.
“People blowing kisses at one another, guys holding hands, being whimsical and silly – it’s a lot of fun,” he said.
